Hallå där Eric Duncan, Coveris!

Hello there Eric Duncan, Head of UK Food Science, Coveris. You are one of the experts in the field of Retail Packaging, talking on the Conference ”Livsmedelsförpackningar i fokus” in Stockholm on thursday this week.

What will You talk about?

Reducing food waste through packaging innovation.

How come this subject is relevant right now?

100 million tonnes of food are thrown away in Europe every year, and the global cost of food waste is $300 billion US dollars. Exciting innovations in food packaging technology can help to reduce that food waste.

What do You think about today's food packaging?

Today’s food packaging is largely doing a good job. The industry has come a long way in getting the balance right between reducing packaging usage, and maintaining the crucial function of food packaging in maintaining fresh food quality, and reducing food waste. But the packaging industry cannot rest on its laurels – we must keep on implementing continuous improvement, and driving innovation.

How can a conference like this contribute to better packaging?

Conferences like Food Packaging in Focus help to promote the exchange of information and ideas. Conferences help food packaging suppliers to understand the needs and wish-lists, as well as the problems and challenges, on the minds of food manufacturers. And food manufacturers have the opportunity to learn about new and innovative solutions packaging suppliers can offer, to help them meet challenges and overcome problems, and to meet their needs and fulfil their food packaging wish lists.

What do You want most of all of the packaging of the future?

Increasingly application-specific food packaging solutions, to provide more and more exciting improvements in maintenance of food quality, reduced food waste, convenience, environmental responsibility, and consumer ‘wow factor!’ As with current food packaging solutions, food safety must continue to be paramount.
